A happening which promises to be far from anything you've ever experienced. Where else would one want to Ring In The Millennium. Come to Philadelphia . . . The city of lights, liberty, the pursuit of history and a great time.

Philadelphia, known for where the past comes alive not only offers you the opportunity to see where our nation's freedom was born: Independence National Historical Park but as well allows you to take a stroll through history. A must on everyone's list is the world's most famous bell Ñ The Liberty Bell. Let's not forget places such as Independence Hall, Congress Hall, Ben Franklin's Court, the Betsy Ross House and much more.

Known not only for its history, Philadelphia houses the nation's largest landscaped city park which offers a bounty of sights and adventure: Fairmount Park. Visit Lemon Hill, Mt. Pleasant, Strawberry Mansion, and the Japanese House and Garden. Next to the park famous landmarks such as the Waterworks, The Museum of Art, Boathouse Row, Bartram's Garden and the Philadelphia Zoo can be found and explored.

PHILADELPHIA WELCOMES YOU!

Stacie Kirsch
2000 LAC CHAIR

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Microscopy Society of America, the Microbeam Analysis Society and the Microscopical Society of Canada/Societe de Microscopie du Canada, we invite you to attend Microscopy and Analysis 2000, August 13-17, in Philadelphia. The program chair, Stuart McKernan, and Co-Chairs Bob Price (MSA), Scott Walck (MAS) and Raynald Gauvin (MSC/SMC) have assembled another excellent technical program that continues the tradition of exciting and current presentations at the meetings. An outstanding list of invited speakers highlights the symposia in a number of key areas. Special symposia this year again cover a wide range, including those with a local flair, such as "Muscle Microscopy in Philadelphia" and "Imaging in the Pharmaceutical Industry", a historical overview to celebrate the transition to the new millennium, and symposia on new detector developments, new techniques and a wide variety of applications in biology and materials research.

Both invited and contributed abstracts are critical to the success of these symposia, so we urge you to submit your work. Remember that the abstract deadline is February 15th, 2000.

A special pre-meeting congress, "SPM of Soft Materials," as well as several short courses on important, basic techniques will precede the meeting. Special symposia, tutorials and presentations sponsored by the Technologists Forum, the MSA Education Committee, and various commercial exhibitors will be held during the course of the meeting. There are also Presidential Happenings, ceremonies for Award Winners, and the world's largest display of microscopes and related equipment.

Our Local Arrangements Committee, headed by Stacie Kirsch, has arranged an excellent venue at the Philadelphia Convention Center for both the scientific sessions and the exhibits. They have also arranged a memorable program of social events including a Sunday night reception, the annual golf tournament, a cruise on the Delaware river and a large number of options for enjoying the city and surrounding area. With its rich history, wealth of educational institutions and active industry, Philadelphia provides a wonderful context for this meeting, and we urge you to come to learn, teach, share and above all to enjoy. Whatever your connection to microscopy, we look forward to welcoming you to Philadelphia in August at Microscopy and Microanalysis 2000.
