Microscopy & Microanalysis '98, a joint meeting of the Microscopy Society of America (MSA) and Microbeam Analysis Society (MAS), will be held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA, Sunday, July 12 through Thursday, July 16, 1998. On Sunday there will be short courses and an evening social at SciTrek, Atlanta's Science and Technology Museum; the scientific program runs from Monday morning through Thursday afternoon; the commercial exhibits will be open from Monday noon through Thursday afternoon. On Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12, there will be a pre-meeting symposium/workshop entitled, ÒMulti-Photon Excitation Microscopy". The program will feature symposia and general sessions highlighting the latest developments in all areas of microscopy and microanalysis. Advances in instrumentation and techniques as well as their applications to physical and biological sciences will be covered in the meeting. Approximately 600 scientific presentations are anticipated with a total attendance of around 2500. The meeting format will consist of both poster and platform presentations, as well as tutorials, short courses, vendor demonstrations, a public policy presentation, and special interactive ÒProblem Solving with the Experts" sessions (see page 05). A complete list of symposia and topics anticipated for general sessions begins on page 10 and special events are listed on pages 05-09. Booths and exhibits on activities of the sponsoring Societies, such as the MSA Technologists' Forum, Certification Board, Education Committee (including videotape and book displays) and Placement Office (an employer/employee information exchange service), will be open throughout the week. Tours Three special tours have been organized by the Local Arrangements Committee for Microscopy & Microanalysis '98. All tours include transportation via deluxe coaches and professional guides. Tour buses will depart from and return to the Georgia World Congress Center. Volunteers will be on hand to direct you to the correct bus. Sign up on the Advance Registration form. No refunds unless the tour is cancelled. Today we will go to Zoo Atlanta and the Center for Puppetry Arts with a stop at the famous Varsity Drive-In for lunch. Zoo Atlanta is regarded as one of the premier zoos in the United States with beautiful natural habitats for animals and animal groupings. The Center for Puppetry Arts houses puppets from all over the world, including the Muppets and Punch & Judy. The price includes all admission fees. Lunch at the Varsity is not included, but should run between $4.00 - $6.00. This Whirlwind Tour of Atlanta includes many important and some poignant sites of the city's history. Included are the Georgia World Congress Center, Centennial Olympic Park, Ebenezer Baptist Church, the State Capitol, and the Governor's mansion among others. The tour will be stopping at Cyclorama in Grant's Park to relive the Battle of Atlanta and at the Martin Luther King Memorial to reflect on more recent history. There will be no lunch stop during this Òwhirlwind" tour. The tour price includes admission to Cyclorama. Take the Six Flags adventure! Try the Great American Scream Machine, Z Force, The Viper or Thunder River. If one of these can't get your heart pounding, try the southeast's only suspended looping coaster, Batman The Ride. For those not so daring, enjoy the acts, entertainment, and souvenir shops throughout the park as well as the train, bumper cars, and an antique carousel. The tour price includes admission fees and a meal voucher to one of four Six Flags restaurants. Tentative: Braves Baseball in Turner Stadium Tuesday, July 14 *** 6:00 p.m. *** $47.50 per person First stop for this night of baseball will be the Centennial Olympic Park for a scrumptious boxed dinner. Then it is a ride down Hank Aaron Drive to Turner Stadium to watch the Champion Atlanta Braves. The price includes transportation, boxed dinner, a pavilion-level ticket, parking, and a great night of baseball. The Braves schedule will be announced in November. The Eleventh Annual Golf Tournament is slated for Sunday, July 12 at the Southland Country Club in Stone Mountain, GA. Both MSA and MAS members and exhibitors are welcome to participate in this traditional outing. The format for this year will be a Lauderdale/scramble with a limit of 12 groups of 4. Prizes will be awarded for teams with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd lowest score, longest drive on 13 (par 5 with a wide fairway), and closest to the pin on 17 (par 3 with a nice approach). Cost is $65.00 per person and includes roundtrip transportation by deluxe coach, green fees, cart, and a cold dinner at the clubhouse, where the prizes will be awarded. This event will be canceled in the event of rain. |
