Posters and Micrograph Competition
All scientific poster presentations at the Meeting automatically are
considered for the following Awards, the winners of which will be announced at the MSA
Business Meeting.
Poster Awards
MSA Poster Awards for the best posters in the category of:
1. Advances in Instrumentation & Techniques
2. Applications of Microscopy & Microanalysis Ð Biological
3. Applications of Microscopy & Microanalysis Ð Physical
First ($200.00) & Second ($100.00) Prizes will be awarded in each category. Sponsored by MSA.
MSA Student Poster Awards Ð NEW!
These awards are for the Best Student (Lead Author) posters in the categories listed above.
First ($200.00) & Second ($100.00) Prizes will be awarded in each category. Sponsored by MSA.
4. The Cecil Hall Award for the best poster illustrating the application of analytical microscopy to a biological system.
5. The Diatome Awards for the posters illustrating the best use of diamond-knife ultramicrotomy in either the biological or physical sciences. First Prize: one-week, all-expense- paid trip to Switzerland for two; Second and Third Prizes: Swiss watches. Sponsored by Diatome U.S.
6. MSA Traveling Poster Exhibit Awards for the ten best posters in the physical and biological sciences as deter- mined by a panel of judges chosen by the MSA Education Committee. If your poster is selected, you may leave it at the meeting with the Traveling Exhibit Chairperson or ship it to them after the meeting. In either case, a drawing of the poster layout should be included. So that photos can be taken and arrangements made for the poster to join the Traveling Exhibit, poster winners should be at their posters at a time which will be announced. Sponsored by MSA Education Committee.
Poster Instructions
Papers will be assigned by the Program Committee to either a platform or poster presentation, unless Òprefer posterÓ is specified on the Data Form, in which case that preference will be honored. Corresponding Authors will be notified of this assignment after the program has been made final in April. The criteria for assignment of papers include the nature and size of the session and the number of related simultaneous sessions.
Each poster will be allocated a 94"-wide by 46"-high display area. A 12"-high strip at the top should contain the title of the paper and the names and affiliations of the authors. Authors are advised that it is not appropriate simply to attach a copy of the abstract to the display board, just as it would not be appropriate simply to read the abstract during a platform presentation. The poster should have large legible text and figures, and describe the results in a manner that would be clear to a reader, even in the authorÕs absence.
Audio/visual equipment, except for stereo projection, may be requested for poster presentations on the Exhibition Hall floor. NOTE: To be guaranteed that equipment, authors must indicate what they need under audio/visual requirements on Data Form (see page 14). Remember, mounted stereo images may be presented for stereo viewing through stereo viewers provided by the author. Authors must provide their own male or hook velcro or push pins for mounting.
The new poster presentation format, introduced in 1996, will be followed again in 1998. There will be special poster presentations after lunch, highlighting approximately one-fourth of the posters each day. During the poster presentations, authors will have the option to present a 1-2 minute comment on their poster to an audience in reserved rooms and will be allowed a maximum of one slide (but no stereo projection) or overhead transparency to illustrate their short presentation. Authors will remain at their posters between 1:15 and 3:00 p.m. on their assigned day, except for the 30 minute poster presentation session in a separate room. All posters must be hung in the Exhibition Hall on Monday between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and must remain on view until 3:00 p.m. Thursday. Corresponding Authors of papers assigned as posters will be notified of the assignment of a particular dayÕs session (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) after the program has been made final in April.
Micrograph Competition
The meeting will include a micrograph competition sponsored by MSA. The SocietyÕs intention is to promote innovative blending of art and science by avoiding usual restriction as to content and method.
The competition is open to all forms of microscopic imaging. Winners will be selected on the basis of artistic merit and general audience appeal, regardless of the subject matter, the method or type of microscopy, or the means and materials used to produce the displayed micrograph. However, winning entries must be scientifically significant, that is, they must either contain novel information useful in resolving a scientific issue and/or present established information in a way that dramatically enhances its comprehension or interpretation. All submitted micrographs must have a title and be accompanied by a brief description, not only of their technical aspects, but also of their scientific significance. Although all submitted micrographs will be displayed, entries regarded by the judges not to be scientifically significant will not be considered for prizes. Please read the following rules carefully:
Only members of MSA and/or MAS are eligible to enter.
Any individual may submit either one or two entries, but no more than two.
No individual may win more than one prize.
Entries must be 11" x 14", may be mounted vertically or horizontally, and must be affixed to a stiff lightweight support, such as 1/4" foam board. Micrographs may either be flush mounted or have borders so long as the overall dimensions of the entry are 11" x 14".
Entries must be brought to the Meeting and mounted on the display boards by the entrant or his/her delegate. Entries must be mounted between noon and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 12 and non-winners removed between noon and 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15. Micrographs remaining on the display boards after then will be discarded.
Winning micrographs will be incorporated into the MSA Traveling Poster Exhibit for 1998-1999 and will be returned to the owners during the summer of 1999.
Winners will be announced at the Meeting.
To enter: Send your name, address, telephone and fax numbers, title and a description of 200 words or less for each entered micrograph (maximum two) to Microscopy & Microanalysis Õ98, c/o MSA Meeting Managers, 7000 West Southwest Highway, Chicago Ridge, IL 60415, Phone: 708-361-6000, Fax: 708-361-6166, or Email it to msa@tradeshownet.com. Descriptions must explain the technical aspects of the entry and its scientific significance as defined above.
Entry information must be received by June 1, 1998. Entries will be acknowledged promptly. Do not send micrographs: you must bring them or have them brought to the Meeting.
Meeting Office staff will print your description(s) in standard form and prepare them to be mounted along with your micrograph(s) at the Meeting.
Submitted micrographs remain the property of the entrants subject to the conditions above.
