Microscopy & Microanalysis '99, a joint meeting of the Microscopy Society of America (MSA) and the Microbeam Analysis Society (MAS), will be held at the Portland Convention Center in Portland, OR, Sunday, August 1, 1999 through Thursday, August 5, 1999. On Saturday and Sunday (July 31-August 1) before the meeting there will be a special two day congress on "Optical Microscopy in the next Millennium". On Sunday there will also be a series of short courses, described later in this booklet, and an evening social at the Oregon Zoo. The scientific program runs from Monday morning until 5 P.M. Thursday evening; the commercial exhibits will be open from Monday noon through Thursday afternoon. The local committtee has put together an exciting array of social events to complement your scientific endeavors. The program will feature symposia and general sessions highlighting the latest developments in all areas of microscopy and microanalysis. Advances in instrumentation and techniques as well as their applications to physical and biological sciences will be covered in the meeting. Approximately 600 scientific presentations are anticipated with a total attendance of around 2500. The meeting format will consist of both poster and platform presentations, as well as tutorials, short courses, vendor demonstrations, a public policy presentation, and special interactive ÒProblem Solving with the Experts" sessions . Booths and exhibits on activities of the sponsoring Societies, such as the MSA TechnologistsÕ Forum, Certification Board, Education Committee (including videotape and book displays) and Placement Office (an employer/employee information exchange service), will be open throughout the week. We think you will find this year's meeting in the "City of Roses" an exciting one.
