WELCOME TO PORTLAND
"City of Roses"

The Pacific Northwest Electron Microscopy Society, the host society, cordially invites you to attend Microscopy and Microanalysis '99 in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, the Pacific Northwest. Besides the relative lack of humidity and overbearing heat that Portland usually experiences in the month of August, come and enjoy the many outdoor activities. The Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area is the home of some of the best windsurfing in the world. It is also in this same area where the annual golf tournament will be held, with breathtaking views of the Gorge and the Columbia River. Within a relatively close drive is Mount St. Helens, where one can view the effects of a volcanic eruption and the regrowth that has occurred over the past 12 years.

Come and enjoy the delicious seafood and other culinary delights the city offers. As the region with the largest number of microbrews, the Local Arrangements Committee has organized a special preconference Saturday evening tour and tasting of a few of the homegrown delights. In addition, we have scheduled the opening reception at the Zoo, which has the largest collection of elephants born in captivity and has a marvelous African and rain forest exhibit.

If you would like to spend more time enjoying the greater Pacific Northwest, as a fund raising event for the local affiliate society, a special discounted postconference cruise to Alaska is being offered (see the 4 page insert for additional details). Welcome again to the City of Roses.

Charlie Meshul
'99 LAC Chair

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Microscopy Society of America and the Microbeam Analysis Society, we invite you to attend Microscopy and Microanalysis '99, August 1st - 5th in Portland, Oregon. The Program Chair, Jay Jerome, and Co-chairs, Stuart McKernan, John Mansfield, and Bob Price have assembled an excellent technical program. An outstanding list of invited speakers highlight the symposia in a number of key areas including emerging instrumentation, image processing and analysis, scanned probe microscopy, low voltage SEM, TEM, and developments in optical microscopy to name a few. A number of specialized symposia dealing with topics such as Laser Tweezers, Live Cell Microscopy, and Molecular Spectroscopy have also been planned.

Both invited and contributed abstracts are critical to the success of these symposia so we urge you to submit your work. Remember that the abstract deadline is February 15th, 1999.

A special pre-meeting symposium and workshop on Fluorescence Microscopy as well as a number of "state-of-the-art" short courses will precede the meeting. Special symposia, presentations, and tutorials spon- sored by the Technologists' Forum, the MSA Education Committee, and various commercial exhibitors will be held during the course of the meeting. There are also Presidential Happenings, ceremonies for Award Winners, and the world's largest display of microscopes and associated technologies. A highlight of M&M '99 will be a symposium commemorating 50 years of Microprobe Analysis. Speakers will cover not just the early days but developments up to and including the latest technology in microprobe analysis today. In addition, there will be a special symposium honoring Professor Archie Howie, Director of the Cavendish Laboratory.

Our Local Arrangements Committee, headed by Charles Meshul, has arranged an excellent venue at the Oregon Convention Center both for the scientific sessions and the exhibits. They have also arranged an excellent program of social events including a Saturday night microbrew tasting and dinner, a Sunday night reception at the Washington Park Zoo, a Wednesday evening river cruise, and even a post-conference cruise to Alaska. Portland is well known for its scenery, its many and varied attractions, its restaurants, and its night life, so we urge you to come to teach, learn, share and above all to enjoy. Whatever your connection to microscopy, we look forward to welcoming you to Portland in August, 1999 for Microscopy and Microanalysis '99.
