Post-doctoral research associate position in the LeRoy Eyring Center for Solid State Science at Arizona State University.

Description:
The position carries responsibilities in two main areas. The primary research focus (50 % effort) will be the development and application of in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy to problems in catalytic nanomaterials related to sustainable energy applications. The successful candidate will use atomic resolution imaging and spectroscopy to determine structural changes under reactive gas conditions and relate this to materials properties. A second responsibility is assisting with the diverse projects of the Industrial Associates Program. The successful candidate will gain experience working on real industrial materials problems in an academic setting. The position requires extensive experience in transmission electron microscopy. Experience in the areas of in situ transmission electron microscopy is also preferred. This position provides an opportunity to work on cutting-edge research related to sustainable energy. The unique perspective provided by the Industrial Associates Program also provides excellent opportunities for individuals interested in expanding and broadening their exposure to a wide range of materials problems.

Qualifications:

We currently seek a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on an ARC funded project. This project aims to apply state-of-the-art in-situ deformation transmission electron microscopy techniques to reveal how crystalline defects in nanostructured metals and alloys interact with each other and to link directly the interactions with the mechanical behaviour of the materials. The results will enable structural design of advanced metallic materials with optimum mechanical properties.

This is an opportunity to work closely with Associate Professor Xiaozhou Liao and conduct research at the Centre for Advanced Materials Technology (CAMT) within the school. You will be part of a school which has a high international profile for its quality research over a wide field in materials characterisation and processing, nanotechnology, advanced manufacturing, solid mechanics and biotechnology.

Having completed a PhD in Material Science (or relevant area), you will have extensive experience in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with a solid background and understanding in the structure and mechanical properties of materials.

The project will bring a cutting-edge technique to Australian science that adds an important arm to our already prominent research strengths in materials science, and will provide Australian scientists greater capability to understand and design advanced materials.

Research Scientist

Description:

The Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) is seeking one or more experienced electron microscopists to serve as staff members in the Electron Microscopy Core of the Center for Microanalysis of Materials (CMM). The EM core is part of the MRL Central Facilities, a midscale user facility with a large array of high performance instrumentation including electron microscopes (SEM, FIB/SEM, and TEM), instrumentation for surface microanalysis (SIMS, XPS, etc.), scanning probe microscopy (AFM, STM), x-ray diffraction, laser/optical materials characterization, and other analytical methods. Additional information about the MRL Central Facilities can be found at http://mrl.illinois.edu/. Successful candidates must have experience with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), FIB/SEM or TEM techniques and varied modes of sample preparation. As part of the EM core group, each position will have shared responsibilities for user training and support of the entire core's instrumentation. The main goal of the EM team is to facilitate the research of a very large and diverse SEM/FIB/TEM user base. Duties will include training and advising users in the operation of the microscopes and sample preparation techniques, ensuring optimal instrument performance, conducting and/or supervision of basic maintenance. In addition, general supervision of the instrument and sample preparation laboratories, i.e., ensuring adherence to safe practices of the user base is required. A fraction of the candidate's time can be used to pursue independent and/or collaborative research activities within a broad range of MRL research programs.

Qualifications:

Successful candidates must have at least a B.S. degree plus 3 years of related experience; or M.S. degree plus 1 year of related experience; or a Ph.D. degree with related graduate level research experience. The terminal degree should be in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field. Each position requires prior extensive hands-on experience performing SEM and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy on a wide variety of materials, as well as characterization of materials at the nanoscale. Additional experience with FIB/SEM and/or TEM as well as training instrument users is highly desired.

Experienced Transmission Electron Microscopist

Description: The University of Minnesota is seeking an experienced transmission electron microscopist for a position in the College of Science and Engineering Characterization Facility (CharFac), which houses a variety of transmission and scanning electron microscopes, in addition to other advanced materials and biological characterization instruments.

Qualifications: The applicant should possess expertise in routine TEM maintenance, high-resolution TEM imaging, analytical (S)TEM with EELS and EDX spectroscopy, specimen preparation, and interpretation of results from TEM images, analyses, and diffraction patterns. The successful candidate must be able to multi-task on a variety of TEM-related activities, both independently and in collaboration with disparate "users" ranging from those seeking the services of an expert microscopist (i.e., clients, usually with minimal TEM understanding) to those seeking training to become independent (and some cases advanced) microscopists. The job includes a substantial teaching component as the CharFac has a long history of training students, postdocs, and industrialists to use state-of-the-art materials characterization instrumentation. A Ph.D. or M.S. in materials science, physics, geology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or similar science or engineering discipline is required. A minimum of five years TEM experience for the characterization of solid-state materials is required.

In addition to the technical criteria for a professional microscopist, the following attributes are particularly sought:

  1. Ability to interface well with industrial personnel, including training, analytical service and research collaboration.
  2. Strong interest in (a) hands-on laboratory work; (b) detailed data analysis; and (c) authoring of client reports, application notes and user training materials (i.e., in addition to journal publications).
  3. Interest and aptitude for developing new analytical methodologies as well as IT systems within a technical context (e.g., custom data analysis algorithms).
  4. Some experience with aberration-corrected (S)TEMs.

Post-Doc Position in Neuroscience

A position of Research Associate (junior or senior post-doc) is available in the Department of Neuroscience at the Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC), a fast growing private Medical School in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Description: Our research group investigates synaptic function and morphology of cortical synapses in mice. The particular focus is on presynaptic function, morphology and signaling pathways that regulate synaptic vesicle dynamics and transmitter release. The applicant is expected to conduct basic biomedical research on cellular and molecular mechanisms by using a wide range of technologies in particular live fluorescence imaging and electron microscopy, and also transgenic mouse models, molecular biology, and electrophysiology. The applicant is expected to work independently on current research areas in our laboratory.

Since we apply molecular biology techniques to transgenic mouse models it is important that the applicant is willing to work with biohazardous material and has no allergies to rodents.

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate would be a motivated scientist with a strong background in modern fluorescence microscopy (confocal, two-photon, 4Pi, STORM, or STED) and/or modern electron microscopy (i.e. electron tomography, 3D reconstruction, and/or cryo techniques).
  • A background in neuroscience is required.
  • Experiences in one or more of the following techniques are preferred: molecular biology, cell culture, calcium imaging, and electrophysiology.

Electron Microscopy Research Technician

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of techniques for the preparation of tissue for light and electron microscopy including chemical fixation, staining and embedding. Comprehensive knowledge of and skill to use transmission electron microscopes, light microscopes, ultramicrotomes.
  • Knowledge of the theory and techniques of immunolabeling, immunofluorescence, immunoperidoxidase, and immunogold with the ability to develop and standardize new techniques and procedures for protein labeling.
  • Basic knowledge of tissue structure on an anatomical, cellular and molecular level. Skill in serial ultramicrotomy.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance on electron microscopes and light microscopes.
  • Skill at performing small animal surgery including tissue biopsy, vascular perfusion, and intravenous microinjections.
  • Knowledge of digital photographic techniques including visual arts productions, copy work, photographic printing and enlarging, and slide making.

Technical Director of Light Microscopy Imaging Core

Description:

The Department of Physiology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is currently ranked number two in the US among Departments of Physiology based on its research funding, has a Light Microscopy core equipment facility consisting of Zeiss Pascal, FiveLive and a Model 710 multiphoton microscopes in addition to other conventional fluorescence and bright field microscopes. A trained technical director is sought to provide technical support to faculty and staff and to maintain the core equipment in working order. The primary role of the core equipment technical director will be to provide training and technical assistance with a wide variety of different Zeiss laser-scanning confocal microscopes, including a point-scanning machine, a high-speed imaging system, and a multi-photon microscope (prior experience with Zeiss confocal microscopes is beneficial). The Core Equipment technical director will organize and maintain booking sheets and document fee-for use billing of equipment when necessary. The technical director is also required to maintain the departmental seminar room presentation equipment (personal computer, projector, audio) and some other shared equipment (plate readers, in vivo imaging system) in working order. The technical director will also be the Safety Officer for the Department and be required to make sure all laboratories post annual safety records. The technical director will have to maintain and update web-booking of equipment and posting user manuals and instructions on the department's website.

The projected effort allocation of the technical director is listed in the table below.

Lecturer in Advanced Materials Physics

Description:
Sanford-Burnham Institute is a non-profit academic research institute with locations in La Jolla, CA, Orlando, FL and Santa Barbara, CA. The Institute has more than 1,000 employees divided in about 100 independent research groups. This position will support imaging in our 175,000 SF research facility in Orlando, FL. The core is responsible for providing routine and advanced imaging capability to investigators. The core currently provides training and scientific advice pertinent to the usage of a Nikon A1R VAAS confocal platform, a Nikon inverted epifluorescent calcium-imaging and TIRF live-cell platform; an Olympus inverted epifluorescent platform, an Aperio Fluorescent Scanscope, a PALM Microbeam IV Dissection Microscope, and an FEI Morgagni electron microscope. This position requires an individual with experience working in an imaging core.

The individual must have demonstrated ability to cooperate and work with others as demanded by the needs of a major research institute. It must be able to communicate effectively, demonstrate an interest in professional development, possess the ability to define and resolve problems, and work independently. The individual will be responsible for routine aspects of the imaging core, maintenance, training of scientific staff, and troubleshooting, especially on transmission electron microscopy, confocal and epifluorescence live and fixed cell microscopy.

Individual must provide technical expertise to ensure the smooth operation of the Imaging core. Qualified candidates must have experience operating a Transmission Electron Microscope, confocal microscope, and be familiar with imaging software (Volocity, NIS Elements, and Image-Pro). It is essential to have high proficiency in processing samples for use in TEM. Individual must have the ability to maintain complete and accurate records, data reports, and be responsible for billing services performed by the imaging core Individual must operate and maintain complete documentation on all imaging core equipment, keep an adequate inventory of supplies, reagents and solutions, and dispose following proper regulations of any biohazard and potentially hazardous materials used in the core.

Qualified candidate must have BS Degree in Biological Science with knowledge of biology, anatomy and physiology and a minimum of 10 years of experience. At least 3 of those years with experience using a TEM and confocal microscope. Masters degree preferred.

The Analytical Microscopy Group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a leading research group in the fields of electron microscopy (TEM, SEM), scanning probe microscopy (AFM, STM, NSOM) and their applications to the characterization of semiconducting materials and devices. We are currently seeking a Post Doctoral Fellow to join our team. The main responsibility will be to carry out TEM/STEM characterization of polycrystalline thin film structures for photovoltaic applications. Particular emphasis will be on the examination of structural defects, phase formation, and interfaces in polycrystalline compound semiconductors. The goal of the research is to correlate the structural and compositional properties with solar cell parameters.

Qualifications:
A Ph. D. in materials science or a related subject and a strong TEM/STEM background are required. Experience with Z-contrast, EELS and EDS analysis is highly desirable.

Scientific Officer in Advanced Light Microscopy

Description:
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

The successful candidate will work in the Advanced Light Microscopy Facility at EMBL. (S)he will teach and support users in high content and high throughput microscopy technology. This includes all aspects of assay development with respect to automated high throughput image acquisition, image data analysis and large-scale data management. Post holder will also write custom software packages that allow users to conduct experiments at large scale automatically and if necessary develop custom hardware in collaboration with the EMBL workshops and industrial partners. (S)he will also develop custom software for image analysis of user data and will participate in the testing and establishing of cutting edge microscopy technology equipment in collaboration with the industrial partners of the facility. Post holder will participate in the organization and teaching of international courses on advanced and high throughput, high content microscopy techniques.

Qualifications:
Applicants should hold a PhD in a life sciences discipline with preferably technical background. Experience in cutting edge microscopy technology and image analysis techniques is essential. Advanced skills in high level programing, machine vision and learning, image pattern recognition, handling of large data sets, data evaluation and analysis and the set-up of microscopy equipment would be an advantage. A basic knowledge in current biological and biomedical research is essential. Experience with one or more of the programming languages LabView, Matlab, C, Java, Python as well as literacy with several operating platforms are required. Ability to work under pressure and in a team, with good communication and organisational skills is essential.

Postdoctoral Research Associate (Ann Arbor, MI)

Description:
A post-doctoral research fellow position is available beginning in September 2011 in the area of irradiated material microstructures and microchemistry with Professor Gary S. Was in the Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences Department at the University of Michigan. The successful candidate will work on projects involving microstructural and microchemical characterization of alloys (ferritic-martensitic steels, ODS alloys, advanced austenitic alloys) irradiated with ions to very high doses.

Qualifications:
A Ph.D in Material Science or related field is required. Candidates should have a background in transmission electron microscopy of dislocation microstructures and precipitates. Experience with atom probe tomography and focused ion beam preparation of TEM specimens is preferred.

Position: Postdoctoral Research Associate in "In-situ Electron Microscopy of nucleation and growth of ferromagnetic nanocrystals"

Description:
Newly formed Emergent Atomic and Magnetic NanoStructures group at the Ames Laboratory is seeking a motivated applicant for a postdoctoral research associate position with a focus on the use of combination of cryo-electron microscopy, Fluid Cell TEM, and electron tomography methods for high resolution EM studies of the nucleation and evolution of crystal structure and ferromagnetism in templated nanostructures, including single nanoparticles. This position, funded by the US DOE, is a one year term appointment with the possibility of renewal for up to three years based upon satisfactory job performance.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, material sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience in TEM specimen preparation and handling. Low dose cryo-EM imaging of biological samples and familiarity with off-axis electron holography a plus.
  • Demonstrated hands-on laboratory experience.
  • Expertise with Origin, Labview, Matlab, COMSOL, CAD programs and basic machining skills is preferred

Responsibilities:
The Appointee will develop, test and optimize on-the-EM-window in-situ templated synthesis of magnetic nanocrystalline particles. He/she will also be working with novel micro (& nano) fluidic devices.

Salary:
Is based on the postdoctoral pay scales at Ames Laboratory, Iowa State University, and is commensurate with education and experience.

  • Effectively Provide Analytical Support to Various Business Units Using FE-SEM, EDS, AFM and FTIR Techniques
  • Work closely with Business Unit personnel and Analytical staff to determine appropriate methodologies to investigate physical properties and chemistry of surfaces
  • Responsible for the operation and maintenance of two Scanning Electron Microscopes, AFM and FTIR instruments

  • Coordinate various analyses, if needed, and write summary reports. May act as Project Leader for large projects and/or serve as Analytical Coordinator for select Business Units. In some cases, analytical reports should have the quality necessary for governmental filing purposes (FDA, EPA)
  • Meet customer satisfaction. Complete annual technical objectives
