Senior Research Associate - Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute-

Description:
The Senior Research Associate position will support imaging in the Orlando, FL (Lake Nona) facility in the Imaging Core. The Core is responsible for providing routine and advanced imaging capability to investigators. The core currently provides training and scientific advice pertinent to the usage of a Nikon A1R VAAS confocal platform, a Nikon inverted epifluorescent calcium-imaging and TIRF live-cell platform; an Olympus inverted epifluorescent platform, an Aperio Fluorescent Scanscope and an FEI Morgagni electron microscope. The individual will be responsible for routine aspects of the imaging core, maintenance, training of scientific staff, and troubleshooting, especially on transmission electron microscopy, confocal and epifluorescent live and fixed cell microscopy.

Qualifications:
The Senior Research Associate must have demonstrated ability to cooperate and work with others as demanded by the needs of a major research institute. S/he must be able to communicate effectively, demonstrate an interest in professional development, possess ability to define and resolve problems and be able to work independently.

Qualified candidates must have experience working in an imaging core operating a Transmission Electron Microscope, confocal microscope, and be familiar with imaging software (Volocity, NIS Elements, and Image-Pro). It is essential to have high proficiency in processing samples for use in TEM. Individual must have the ability to maintain complete and accurate records, data reports, and be responsible for billing services performed by the imaging core. Individual must operate and maintain complete documentation on all imaging core equipment, keep an adequate inventory of supplies, reagents and solutions, and dispose following proper regulations of any biohazard and potentially hazardous materials used in the core.

Master's degree in a related discipline and a minimum of seven (7) years of experience required.

Description:: A laboratory group devoted to the study of reservoir rocks at the micro- and nano-scale seeks an electron microbeam technician. Current projects focus on unconventional petroleum and CO2 sequestration reservoirs. The lab specializes in imaging of mineral components in fine-grained rocks by cathodoluminescence, BSE, and X-ray mapping by EDS, and imaging of nano-pore systems at very high-resolution using FEG secondary electron imaging.

Laboratory Research Associate II

Expertise in resin embedding, thin sectioning, cryo sectioning, negative staining, critical point drying, sample coating, SEM and/or TEM operation, preparation of buffers, solutions, grids, etc., and a willingness to accept other duties as might be assigned is essential. We are building a new and broad-based program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) on DNA repair and genome instability, and their role in neurological disease, cancer and aging. GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Manages the Confocal Core, and oversees its daily operation. Works very independently, with little guidance from the Director, and coordinates all Core-associated research activities including but not limited to: supervising the activities of scientists using the facility, participating in the design and modification of research protocols, and follows up on novel or anomalous results, composes and presents research reports and manuscripts. Troubleshoots software (Nikon C1 plus) and hardware (Microscopy, custom-designed environmental chamber), and assists users of the facility by providing specialized media and culture conditions to allow extended (1-2 day) time-lapse confocal viewing of cells. Provides image analysis services and training in image analysis software, including Metamorph and Image J.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains equipment in good working order, troubleshoots both hardware and software, arranges and oversees repairs and service calls. Interfaces with vendors in the development of new software for custom applications. Tests and evaluates new equipment under consideration for use in the Core. Compares equipment from different vendors and makes recommendations as to which best serves our needs.
Designs and maintains website, scheduling calendar, and facilitates communication with users.
Trains users to properly use the system, evaluates user expertise, and determines which users are allowed unsupervised access to the equipment.
Collaborates with other labs, provides advice and input regarding experimental design and execution. Recommends staining techniques using established biomarkers, identifies and assesses the stage of different subcellular structures.
Totals hours and calculates monies owed by different clients on a monthly basis, communicates this information to the business manager for billing and collection. May be asked (by the Director) to suspend user privileges from clients whose accounts remain unpaid for more than 3 months. Assists in monitoring grant budget.
Oversees the collection of data and insures the integrity of same.
Plans, designs and performs statistical analyses.
Implements and provides quality assurance procedures and systems.
Provides post-acquisition image processing for publication, to fit the specific needs of different journals. Prepares data and may present data at scientific meetings, in addition to preparing articles for publication.

Qualifications:

B.S. degree in Biological Sciences, excellent computer skills, good communication skills and mechanical skills

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

High degree of computer literacy, including web design and management (Fireworks, Dreamweaver), image analysis (Image J, Metamorph), scientific illustration (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator).
Sound analytical and organizational skills
Good oral and written communication skills
Must be able to logically and effectively structure tasks, set priorities, and multitask.

A Post Doc or other Research Associate appointment is available in the Dept. of Crop Science at NC State University effective January 1, 2010. The successful candidate will be employed in the laboratory of Dr. Candace Haigler, Professor of Crop Science and Plant Biology, at NC State. They will work within the Center for Lignocellulose Structure and Formation, a newly funded DOE EFRC including Penn State, NC State, and Virginia Tech. The candidate's research will involve advanced transmission electron microscopy in conjunction with genetic analysis and protein identification to elucidate the structure and function of the cellulose-synthesizing complex in plant and microbial systems. The research will be coordinated with others working in the areas of nanobioengineering, computational modeling, and biochemistry.

Minimum Requirements are:

Ph.D. in biological sciences, bio-engineering, or closely related disciplines.

Other required skills are:

High level expertise in transmission electron microscopy of biological systems demonstrated by publication in peer-reviewed international research journals.

Biological Applications Specialist

Description:: Biological Applications Specialist is responsible for customer support in the application of Gatan systems in biological microscopy techniques.

Responsibilities include on-site customer training, applications support, telephone/email support, limited hardware and software troubleshooting, and support of Field Service engineers. The Biological Applications Specialist must ensure that Gatan systems meet operating specifications, perform documenting service, and manage scheduling. In addition, the specialist is responsible for proposing design enhancements and improvements.
Qualifications:: The successful candidate must have a strong background in biological microscopy, specifically in relation to acquisition, application, interpretation, and discussion of biological microscopy techniques. This person should be experienced in digital imaging, tomography, cryogenic sample techniques, and cooling holder use for the TEM. A Masters degree or higher is required with experience in hands-on biological analytical TEM applications. Ideally, the successful candidate should have commercial experience in the electron microscopy industry. It is essential that the Biological Applications Specialist have excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in English. Domestic and International travel required 40-70% of the time.

Confocal Microscopy Specialist for Core Microscope Facility

Description:: The Campus Microscopy and Imaging Facility at the Ohio State University has an immediate opening for a person to supervise confocal microscopes; in addition experience with live cell/animal microscopy and multiphoton microscopy will be useful.

The Campus Microscopy and Imaging Facility (CMIF) is the biomedical confocal and electron microscopy core facility serving over 70 faculty labs per year at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. The CMIF is located in the new 10 story Biomedical Research Tower in the Medical Center Campus. The Microscopy Specialist reports to the Lab Manager and the faculty Director. Main tasks are: responsibility for multiphoton and 2D array single photon confocal microscopes. In addition, the successful applicant will perform sample preparation with cryostat for fixed samples and including immunocytochemistry; assists other staff in operation of scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope; works closely with individual scientists on their research projects to develop research plans; provides technical expertise on research methods. This position requires a self-motivated, detail-oriented professional with great microscopy skills.

Instruments in the CMIF are: FEI Tecnai G2 BioTWIN TEM with cryo, FEI Nova 400 Nano SEM, Olympus FV1000 spectral system, Olympus FV1000 filter system, VisiTech Infinity3 2D array confocal microscope, CRI Nuance Multispectral imaging camera, Olympus FV 1000 MPE with Spectral Physics DeepSee TiSaphire laser.
Qualifications:: Bachelors Degree or equivalent education/experience in biological sciences. Demonstrated ability to interact with a wide variety of faculty, researchers, students, and visitors. Considerable experience in biological/health science research lab required; experience with single photon microscopy is required, and experience with multiphoton microscopy is preferred; skills in sample preparation preferred; knowledge of image analysis methods and experience with live cell image microscope desirable.

The position has five main functions:

Execution of demonstrations, training and sample evaluations as part of the sales and customer support process. Primary emphasis will be on Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEMs) instrument demonstrations and applications development.

Confocal Microscopist

Description:: The Center for Ecogenomics in the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University has an immediate opening for a scientist with extensive expertise in biological confocal scanning light microscopy. We conduct life-sciences based research into cellular physiology and disease on both mammalian cells and microbes. The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team environment serving as the point person for research involving two state of the art imaging systems (and several additional transmitted and fluorescence microscopes): 1) A Nikon multi-mode confocal microscope system consisting of a LiveScan SFC (swept field confocal), Spectral C1si (high-spectral resolution) confocal, and Perfect Focus TE2000E2 inverted microscope with TIRF accessories; and 2) A novel cell CT scanner for direct 3D absorption and fluorescence imaging of single cells.

At the core of the skill set we seek is the high level of expertise in fluorescent probe selection and labeling technologies and protocols—and associated probe excitation and emission considerations—necessary to provide optimal signal to noise ratios and to achieve novel and ambitious scientific objectives. This is a hands-on position requiring daily involvement in specimen preparation and image data acquisition in addition to a thorough understanding of the experimental goals and design. The successful candidate will assume full responsibility for managing and optimizing the Center's imaging facility, providing training and expert input to users and active involvement in planning, design and execution of complex research studies. The successful candidate will be expected to keep current with published literature and new developments and technologies that will advance the mission of the center. Opportunities to pursue own research interests. This position is a year-to-year appointment. Continuation of this position is contingent on satisfactory performance, availability of funding and the needs of the program. Qualifications:: Required qualifications:
PhD in cell or molecular biology or related field, and a minimum of five years of recent, hands-on experience in all aspects of biological fluorescence confocal laser scanning microscopy: cell culture; probe selection or design; cell labeling including immunocytochemical labeling and fluorescence in situ hybridization; and image acquisition. Extensive expertise in molecular biology and cell labeling is essential.

Desired qualifications:
Track record of high-quality publications and extramural funding. Hands-on experience in all aspects of absorption light microscopy including immunoperoxidase staining. Proficiency in slide- and tube-based cell preparation and staining protocols and in 3D confocal imaging and image rendering is highly desirable. Expertise in image processing and analysis; mathematics and practical aspects of image reconstruction from projections; other microscopies (various LM modes; TEM; scanned probe; x-ray); molecular biological methods (PCR, FACS, laser capture microdissection); histological techniques; cancer biopsy processing; statistics and design of experiments is preferred but not required.
Salary/Benefits:: Full-time, fiscal year salary plus full, liberal State of Arizona benefits package.
