MSA StC: Boots on the Ground

What is this Strategic Initiative?

In partnership with MSA, the MSA Student Council (MSA StC) has launched a new Strategic Initiative, Boots on the Ground, to fund student travel to Local Affiliated Society (LAS) meetings or other microscopy-related workshops outside of our annual Microscopy and Microanalysis conference. The goal of this new initiative is to provide students with more opportunities to engage with the broader MSA community year round as well as to make more students aware of ongoing opportunities for professional development that are offered through the Student Council.  Through this initiative students can travel to learn from scientific programs brought by the LAS’s as well as serve as ambassador representative for the MSA StC, while gathering leadership skills.

Students selected to receive this travel funding will serve as ambassadors for the MSA Student Council to these local meetings. The Student Council will supply a few brief slides as well as handouts for students to distribute at these meetings.

This funding is designed especially to assist students from traditionally underrepresented or underserved communities or those with demonstrated financial need; however, the only formal requirement for funding eligibility is to be a registered student member of MSA, and all students are welcomed and encouraged to apply.

Funding Levels

Award recipients will be reimbursed up to $500 for travel to microscopy-related meetings, with a supplement of up to $200 for promotional materials, and up to $2500 for workshops.
